Think of
work as vocation. It
should be something that calls to you as something you want to do,
and it should be something that gives voice to who you are and what
you want to say to the world.
A vocation fills you with a sense of meaning. It is something that you
choose because of what it allows you to say with your life.
– Kent
Nerburn, Letters to My
Son
Does the practice of law give voice to
who you are and what you want to say to the world? Are your personal values reflected in the way
you practice law?
Effective advocacy does not mean that you
have to abandon your humanity.
Civility, courtesy and compassion can be
compatible with zealous representation.
Revitalise your law practice by exploring innovative
approaches to the practice of law which allow you to integrate your
personal values into your professional life -- approaches which are
sensitive to the needs and core values of clients, lawyers and
society.
These humanistic approaches to law view legal issues in the
context of the relationships between the parties with the goal of
optimising client well-being and strengthening connections between
people rather than increasing separation and discord.
This two-day seminar will emphasise practical skills.
Topics and skills covered include:
* how to assist clients in identifying goals for the
representation, including
non-financial goals which are often overlooked
* the role of emotions in legal decision
making
*
how to effectively manage
emotions during the representation process
*
interview techniques
for looking beyond purely legal issues to help clients identify
their core concerns
*
reducing conflict and
improving working relationships with opposing
counsel
*
healership skills for
lawyers
